What is GPWN?: Our History and Goals
The Graduate and Professional Women's Network (GPWN) has been providing Duke's graduate and professional women students with personal and professional networking opportunities since its establishment in Spring 1994. The group has four goals:- to provide a space for graduate and professional school women students to network with other women students outside of their departments and schools as well as professors, administrators, and community members
- to sponsor programs that will teach graduate and professional school women students kills that will help them succeed in their educational and professional careers
- to provide a forum for discussion of campus and community issues
- and to advocate on behalf of graduate and professional school women students to the Duke administration.
GPWN Activities
GPWN's main project is the Educational and Professional Development Dinner Discussion Series. Meet students from different departments, discuss issues of common concern, and enjoy a free meal. Come to one dinner or the entire series. Bring a friend!All discussions are held Wednesdays, from 5:15 - 7 pm at the Women's Center (unless otherwise noted). Dinner is provided. If possible, please RSVP to the Women's Center at (919) 684-3897 or via e-mail to gpwn@duke.edu by the day prior to each dinner you plan to attend. Please attend even if you do not RSVP.
We also sponsor a number of other events each semester. For program details, please refer to the schedule of events. GPWN Events are now listed on the Women's Center Calendar of Events.How You Can Get Involved
GPWN is always open to new members. To find out details about upcoming events, just subscribe to the GRADWOMEN E-Mail List (see below for subscription instructions). People interested in volunteering with GPWN, either by doing administrative work, sitting on the steering committee, or planning an event or two, should contact Heather Dean (contact information listed below). Help is always welcome - there is plenty to do!
Gradwomen E-Mail List and Homepage
The GPWN E-Mail List is called GRADWOMEN. It is our major means of communication and publicity besides distributing a flyer containing the semester schedule. Subscribing will not clutter your mailbox but will keep remind you of upcoming GPWN events. To subscribe to the mailing list, e-mail the message "subscribe gradwomen" (without quotation marks) to: majordomo@duke.edu . You will automatically be added to the distribution list and receive a welcome message containg instructions for posting to the list. Please note that only subscribed members can post to the GRADWOMEN listserv.
Housing Survey
Beginning in 2003, the Duke Community Housing office conducts
annual housing surveys of graduate and professional students about
their off-campus housing experience. The
housing survey reports may help guide you in finding a safe and
dependable home during your stay in Durham. In addition, the
Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) and GPWN conducted
a housing survey in the spring of 1996. While somewhat outdated,
these
survey comments are more qualitative and may add context to the
quantitative numbers in the Community Housing surveys.
