Saturday Night…Untold Stories of Sexual Assault at Duke
What is Saturday Night?
Saturday Night, Untold Stories of Sexual Assault at Duke is a student publication advised by the SASS office that features a well-rounded collection of narratives, poetry, commentary, and images representing students and their support networks’ diverse experiences with sexual violence. The second edition of Saturday Night was released in April 2005. In this edition we hear from survivors in many stages of the healing process, including the initial trauma of the violation, the struggles with long-term healing, the successes of speaking out filing a judicial complaint, as well as the pain and confusion of caring about a survivor. Detailed information is included related to the impact of assault, how to support a survivor, resources, ways to minimize risk, prevention strategies, as well as ways to become involved in prevention efforts on campus.
Since the release of the first edition in 2004, Saturday Night has become an integral part of the prevention work we do on campus. It serves as a catalyst for campus dialogue and a call to action. One of SASS’s most popular prevention workshops this year has been “Close to Home,” a discussion based workshop facilitated by Sexual Harassment And Rape Prevention (SHARP) peer educators centered around excerpts from the publication.
